P.G. Six/Starry Mind/Drag City/2011
Starry Mind, is P.G. Six’s fifth studio album. New Yorker Pat Gubler, from 90s noise bands Memphis Luxure and Tower Recordings, has been performing under this solo project since 2001. Starry Minds is an interesting mixture of prog rock, prog folk, experimental and country in one package. Each song seems to have a predictable formula: start with some forlorn lyrics about the road or missing someone (nod to the folk and country influences), and insert a 1-2 minute experimental, noise inspired, musical interlude (a nod to the experimental and prog rock influences). Sometimes those two things are flipped around, but you get the idea. The lyrics are simple (at times veering on poppy even) , but the music is always textured and complex: listeners get lost in those long musical interludes that vary in tempo and sound.
