Gem Club/Breakers/Hardly Art/2011

Hailing from the Boston area, Gem Club plays minimalistic soft-pop music.  Gem Club is a two piece band composed of Christopher Barnes and Kristen Drymala.  Armed only with piano, cello, and their beautifully haunting voices, Breakers truly feels like a work of art.  The music they play is dream-like, gorgeous and somber, their lyrics are reflective, heartbreaking, and melancholy.  Breakers feels like perfect winter music listening to me: it’s slow and beautiful just like the first snow fall.  These 9 wistful piano ballads are simple and predictable, but that’s what makes this album work.
